Marcia Gayle (Buhr) Scott passed away peacefully Sunday March 31, 2019 at Silver Creek Inn (memory care) Mesa, AZ. She had just celebrated her 81st birthday.

Marcia was born March 23, 1938 in Covington, Kentucky to parents, Harold A. Buhr and Georgia M. (McClure) Buhr. The family relocated when she was very young to San Diego, CA.

Marcia grew up the oldest of three, with brothers Harold Jr. and Ronnie. She attended St. Charles Boromeo Catholic School and often told stories of her love for school, especially math and spelling. Moving again before starting high school her family settled in Santa Ana, CA. Marcia was beautiful inside and out. She was very intelligent even though she left school in the 10th grade.

Her first job was a temporary position opening Disneyland in 1955, at the Trading Post shop in Adventureland. There she met her future husband Kenneth Scott and they soon welcomed their only child Debra Marie. The marriage didn’t last but Marcia’s greatest joy was being a mom and later a Nana.

She worked many years as a journeyman grocery cashier and could memorize the weekly ads with ease. She liked the challenge of counting back change and the interaction with customers. She was an active member of Retail Clerks Union. For a while she drove 90 miles a day to keep full time employment when most was reserved for men. Marcia loved people and would often strike up conversations with strangers who later became longtime friends.

Marcia also worked as a “411” operator and had to quickly look up phone numbers by hand and give them to callers.

It wasn’t easy raising a child as a single parent, but Marcia always kept her strong belief in God and tried to see the best in people. She smiled easily and gave hugs and said “I love you” often. There was no one prouder when her daughter Debra married Robert Krein and she gained a son.

Upon retiring Marcia spent time gardening, cooking, reading, listening to music, helping her aging parents and visiting with her grandchildren. She was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fountain Valley, CA. and served as a visiting Eucharistic Minister. She was happiest spending time with family. When her health started to decline her family brought her from California to Arizona to be near them.

Marcia always wore her signature “Love that Red” lipstick and loved to wear the color red. She also insisted her nails be polished at all times. She especially enjoyed Fridays because her family brought her home for Canes chicken fingers and diet coke. Dessert was always chocolate donuts and laughing with the grand kids; Kelly, Krista, (Jack), and James. She was often caught feeding “Bear” the dog, french fries.

Marcia is reunited in heaven with her grandmother Clara, great aunts Mildred and Lillian, parents Harold and Georgia, in-laws Ted and Ramona, sister-in-law Cyndi, aunts Jane, Laverne and Virginia, plus good friends Marion, Sarah and Lou.

Marcia is survived by her daughter Debra M. Krein, son-in-law Robert B. Krein; brothers Harold A. Buhr Jr. (Angela) and Ronald Buhr (Gail); nieces Shelli, Jennifer, Heather and nephews David and Ryan; grandchildren Kelly Anne Krein, Krista Marie Krein and James Gabriel Krein.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to Special Olympics Arizona
