John Joseph Ayerza
John Joseph Ayerza

April 25, 1938 - February 5, 2020
Born in Fresno, California
Resided in Sun Lakes, Arizona

April twenty fifth, the year 1938
Was a very, very important date

For on that day a baby boy was born
It was a bright, sunny Fresno morn

John Joseph they named the lad
By a proud Basque Mother and Dad

Two brothers (Tony & George) joined the family soon after
Their Tranquillity farm was full of love and laughter

Little Johnny learned English when he entered school
Studying became the golden rule

His high school days were busy ones
At graduation, he was named Valedictorian

After high school, John moved on
To UC Davis for five years long

Studying, work, fraternity, wrestling, & football
Filled his college days as I recall

Into the army he went next
He served his time to his best

He was in Germany when they built the Berlin Wall
He had good stories to tell before the fall

A career with Deere was his decision
His life’s work; he had a vision

A chance meeting at a Laundromat changed his life
And led to an introduction to his future wife

John’s transfer to Phoenix spurred Suzanne on
To ask for his hand before too long

They took their vows at Mary Star of the Sea
And began their 54 years together happily

They were quite settled in the valley of the sun
When another transfer appeared on the horizon

A career change to Arizona Machiney Company
And they became desert rats permanently

John and Suz were blessed with a girl and a boy
Nicole and Michael were their joy

The years sped by as the kids grew and grew
To Ryan and Carmen they married and said I do

And when grandchildren came along
Life really became a song

Loving family and friends filled his life
Along with his constant companion; his wife

After a time, John’s health started to pale
But his will to live never did fail

Even so, all too soon, there came a sad day
And on February 5, 2020 he passed away

John is at peace now and rests with God

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to donate in John's name, I know he would be pleased if you made a contribution to The Basque Museum & Cultural Center in Boise, Idaho.
